Full story
My background is from Nairobi's largest slum, Korogocho. This is the one place I've ever lived. My childhood was like that of many, born in poverty, hungry, insecure, and uncertain. Sometimes we didn't have anything for dinner, and sometimes our family didn't have food for a whole night; tomorrow would be better! Our lives were filled with violence, crime, and no opportunities, and many children around me didn't go to school because survival was more important than education. Although these are difficult times, I did not give up on the possibility of a life of change. I told myself, when the time came, I would help change the future for children who are raised in the same circumstances. No one should be denied the right to attend school because of their hunger. No child should despair for being born into poverty. This dream was transformed into the Jay R Foundation. Currently, our foundation serves children who are vulnerable and homeless in Korogocho, Ngomongo, Baba Dogo, and Lucky Summer. Lives have been changed already. Previously, children were on the streets; now they are attending school. They are provided with meals, clothes, school materials, guidance, and access to sports and other activities to explore their talents, boost their confidence, and keep them off drugs and crime. We have been able to do a lot, but we don't have a long-term home from which to work. At this time, we are working in borrowed or rented spaces, and it is challenging to be able to support all of the children who need us. That's why we bring you this project. The money we raise will go towards creating a permanent institution where children are vulnerable to learning, living, eating, and growing in a safe environment. The funds will be used to purchase land, build classrooms and dormitories, establish a kitchen and dining area, build a clean water and sanitation area, build a library and a sports grounds, and provide beds, learning materials, and essential equipment for the institution. It will also assist us in delivering healthy food, clothing, health, and education to the kids who will be residing in this place. This building will be much more than an institution. It will be a place where children are not afraid, but safe; not illiterate, but educated; not hopeless, but hopeful; not in poverty, but in opportunity. It will be a house of children where each child is cherished, safeguarded, and inspired to aspire beyond their circumstances of birth. Your support is more than a donation; it's an investment in a child's future. Each contribution is a step towards building a generation of educated, healthy and confident youth who can change their lives and their communities. We can stop the cycle of poverty, and we can make sure that no child suffers what I suffered in my childhood. I can imagine what these kids are going through, as I was once one of the kids. I can make a difference today, but I can't do it by myself. Thanks to your generosity, we can create a lasting place of hope where every child can learn, grow, and have a better future. We appreciate your support in helping us make a difference, a child at a time.
