Help Me Make Our Bathroom Safer for My Mom With Dementia

I never thought I’d be making a post like this, but I’ve learned that sometimes it’s okay to ask for a little help. I care for my mother, who has dementia. As her needs have changed, I’ve realized that our current bathroom just doesn’t work well for her anymore. We have a traditional tub that she has to step over, limited room for me to assist her, older flooring, and a layout that wasn’t designed with accessibility in mind. My first and most important goal is to remodel the bathroom so it’s safer and easier for her to use. I’d like to replace the tub with a low-entry or walk-in shower, add grab bars, install safer flooring, improve the lighting, and update the vanity and fixtures to make the space more functional. I’m usually the person helping other people. I spend a lot of my time around properties, maintenance and renovations, yet my own home is always the one I’ve put on the back burner. Asking strangers for help is definitely outside my comfort zone, but creating a better space for my mom is important enough for me to try. I’ve set an initial goal of $7,500 to help with the bathroom renovation, materials and labor. If I’m fortunate enough to receive support beyond what is needed for the bathroom, I would love to put it toward updating our outdated kitchen, which has also been on my someday list for years. I’m not looking for anything extravagant. I simply want a home that’s safer and more functional for my mom and a little more comfortable for our family. Whether it’s $5, $20, $50 or simply sharing my post, I’m genuinely grateful.
